Slate Islands Tour

A Sail Training Expedition to the Edge of the Wilderness

Ask any seasoned sailor, and they’ll agree: the Canadian North Shore of Lake Superior offers some of the most spectacular wilderness sailing on the planet. With its crystal-clear, frigid waters, stunningly scenic and secure anchorages, and a refreshing sense of solitude—thanks to the very few boats that traverse these waters—it’s a cruising experience unlike any other.

But this remote paradise doesn’t come easy. Unpredictable weather, challenging navigation through rocky reefs, and the distance from assistance require preparation, a strong vessel, and a capable crew. With Captain Mark Gordon at the helm of Amicus II, you’ll be in experienced hands for this bold adventure.

The Journey

Sailing between Grand Portage and the Slate Islands in the far northwestern corner of Lake Superior, we aim to reach the remote Slate Islands—home to one of the lake’s last herds of Woodland Caribou. Even if conditions prevent us from making it all the way, the route is rich with hidden bays, wild rivers, and pristine islands waiting to be explored.

What to Expect

This is a sail training expedition designed for adventurous spirits. You’ll be encouraged to actively participate in:

Standing night and day watches

Coastal navigation and sail handling

Life onboard a working sailboat in remote conditions

Because of the potential for long sailing days, rough weather, and possible overnight passages, we recommend that participants either join a previous trip with us or bring a strong sense of adventure and resilience.
