North Shore Learn to Cruise
Minnesota’s North Shore—a stunning 100-mile stretch of open water—is known for its dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear depths, and exposed sailing conditions. While access can be challenging for day sailors or beginners due to limited safe harbors, it becomes a breathtaking adventure with a seaworthy sailboat and a skilled captain at the helm.
Join us for a hands-on sailing expedition from Knife River to Grand Marais—a 90-mile journey along the rugged coastline of the North Shore, with a possible stop on the South Shore as well.
What To Expect
As a participant, you’ll get the full cruising experience—as active or relaxed as you choose. You’ll have the chance to learn and practice:
Sail handling and coastal navigation
Anchoring and steering
Liveaboard skills and basic engine maintenance
This is rigorous open water sailing, mixed with light-air days or calms. Expect weather to play a role—strong winds and summer storms are common and part of the adventure.
Each night, we’ll anchor or dock at well-protected marinas and anchorages along the shore. Beyond sailing, there’s time for hiking, kayaking, rowing, and swimming. All meals are included during the trip.
Transportation
We’ll coordinate transportation for those who leave a car at one end of the route. You’re also welcome to arrange your own pick-up or drop-off if preferred.
