Heavy Weather Sailing Course

Sailing in heavy weather is both a sailor’s greatest challenge and ultimate thrill. Gaining the skills to confidently navigate winds of 15–25 knots on Lake Superior opens the door to a new level of sailing freedom and adventure.

This hands-on, 7.5-hour on-the-water course is designed to give you direct experience with techniques essential for safe and effective heavy weather sailing. Whether you’re looking to sharpen your skills or simply prepare for the unexpected, this course provides a safe environment to push your limits aboard a well-equipped vessel with an experienced captain.

What You’ll Learn

Reefing sails and balancing your rig in rising winds​

Heaving to and other sail-reduction strategies​

Steering techniques in heavy seas​

Storm tactics, including the use of drogues and parachute anchors​

Boat preparation and safety gear considerations​

Navigation and planning in challenging conditions​
